The Hoover Tower serves as a landmark of Stanford University to faculty, students and locals alike. Built in 1941, 50 years after the University’s opening, the Hoover Tower stands 285 feet offering nice views of the University, Silicon Valley, and the salt piles across the Bay. According to Stanford’s documented history, The tower is named after our 31st President, Herbert Hoover, after his generous donation of $50,000. The carillon bells, were given to Hoover in appreciation for famine relief during and after World War I. Many U.C. Berkelites will argue, however, that the Hoover Tower was built simply mark the otherwise unnoticeable 'farm'. (Heh, heh!)
